“It sounds more ‘oily’…”
For some reason, I’ve always remembered that line.
This was how my friend described the difference between a Flanger and Phaser effect to me, way back when we were teenagers in the (very) early 90s and first getting into playing music.
I think Phaser was supposed to be the ‘oily’ sounding one.
I remember it because it just perfectly sums up what it was like in those pre-internet days, where the answer wasn’t just a mouse click away.
…and that was the problem.

Unless you could borrow or buy the gear yourself, word-of-mouth was one of the few options you had to learn from, and – as you can see – not always the best source of information.
Sometimes, it just added noise to sift through on top the jargon.
But here’s the irony: Now that we do have the answers at our fingertips, there’s another noise to contend with altogether; information overload.

For the longest time I wanted a way to share my experiences – both past and present – in recording and producing music, as well as the gear that makes it possible.
There’s a lot to learn in this field, but I’ve been told that I have a knack for making things easier to understand. My goal is to use this skill to try to ‘cut through the noise’ and help aspiring producers and engineers along their journey.

So who am I?
Hi, I’m Ric. I’m a bit of an all-round creative, but it’s music that has had the biggest effect on my life.
I’ve been writing, recording and performing music to various degrees for 30-odd years (yeesh!). Although I’m primarily a guitarist, I was always drawn more to the studio than the stage.
I have bought, traded and borrowed more pro audio equipment than I can remember, and it’s just way too cool of a journey not to share.
I still love keeping up with developments in the technology, and am excited to share my discoveries with you.
What next?
